Religious Leaders Call for Dialogue Ahead of 2027 Elections

SUPKEM Secretary General Sheikh Abdullahi Salat speaks during the National Stakeholders’ Convention on Democratic, Credible and Peaceful 2027 Elections at Ufungamano House, Nairobi, on September 2, 2026.

Religious leaders have called for sustained dialogue, peaceful political engagement and responsible civic participation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The call was made during a national stakeholders’ convention at Ufungamano House, Nairobi, bringing together religious organisations and other actors in the democratic and electoral space to deliberate on Kenya’s preparedness for the next General Election.

Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) Secretary General Sheikh Abdullahi Salat led the Council’s delegation to the meeting, accompanied by Head of Religious Affairs Sheikh Yusuf Maki.

The convention is convened by the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB), Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), SUPKEM and the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) under the Kenya Religious Leaders Forum.

The discussions focus on strengthening democratic participation, electoral credibility and peaceful political engagement while identifying potential risks that could disrupt the electoral process.

The meeting also seeks to assess the preparedness of constitutional bodies with electoral and security mandates and develop measures to mitigate challenges that could undermine democratic, credible and peaceful elections.

Representing the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson, Commissioner Dr. Alutalala Mukhwana outlined the Commission’s state of preparedness for the 2027 General Election.

Dr. Mukhwana reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to delivering a credible, transparent and peaceful election and called on religious leaders and other stakeholders to play their respective roles in supporting the electoral process.

He also urged stakeholders to hold the Commission accountable and embrace dialogue as a means of “charting the country’s peaceful path to 2027.”

The Commissioner said continued engagement among stakeholders would be important in addressing emerging concerns and strengthening confidence in the electoral process.

SUPKEM’s participation reflects its commitment to peaceful democratic engagement, national cohesion, responsible civic participation and credible electoral processes.

The Council advocates for an electoral environment where Kenyans can exercise their constitutional rights peacefully and freely, while encouraging faith communities to contribute to peace, justice and national unity.

The convention provides an opportunity for religious institutions to engage with other national actors on measures to prevent electoral-related tensions and promote peaceful political participation.

Stakeholders are also expected to formulate strategies, actions and commitments aimed at safeguarding the integrity of democratic outcomes before, during and after the 2027 electoral cycle.

The engagement comes as preparations for the next General Election gather momentum, with attention turning to the role of institutions and citizens in ensuring a peaceful and credible electoral process.

The religious organisations are seeking continued consultations among constitutional bodies, government, civil society, faith communities and citizens to address potential challenges before they escalate.

The discussions are expected to contribute to a coordinated approach towards promoting peaceful elections, national cohesion and respect for democratic institutions throughout the 2027 electoral cycle.
