Kenya has launched the Nurse of the Year Awards (NOYA), a new national initiative aimed at recognising the dedication, leadership and contribution of nurses and midwives to the country’s healthcare system.
The awards were unveiled during the International Nurses and Midwives Day 2026 celebrations held in Nairobi under the theme “Our Nurses, Our Midwives, Our Future – Empowered Nurses Save Lives.”
Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said nurses and midwives remain the backbone of healthcare delivery in Kenya, serving communities across hospitals, clinics and remote health facilities.
“Nurses and midwives are the human face of healthcare. They remain present in moments of fear, healing and hope,” said Duale during the launch.
He noted that the awards scheme was designed to celebrate excellence within the profession while motivating future generations of healthcare workers.
The programme will recognise outstanding achievement in areas including clinical practice, leadership, education, research, innovation and primary healthcare.
Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards Mary Muthoni said nurses account for nearly 70 per cent of the country’s health workforce and continue to play a key role in advancing universal health coverage.
She added that the Ministry of Health was implementing reforms aimed at improving training, career progression and working conditions for nurses and midwives.
The awards process will begin at county level before progressing to regional and national stages ahead of the final gala in May 2027.
The celebrations also featured exhibitions showcasing healthcare innovations and nursing training technologies, including patient simulation systems used in clinical learning and emergency response training.
